Itchy skin can be one of the most infuriating parts of your menopause journey. Skin on both your face and body can become dry and irritated as your hormones begin to shift. Whether it’s keeping you up at night or distracting you during the day, AMELIORATE knows how much this small irritation can impact your day.

Why does my skin itch?

The hormonal changes of menopause include a loss of oestrogen, which is related to the production of collagen. Additionally, oestrogen is also related to the production of natural oils that keep your skin moisturised. This combined lack of collagen and natural oils can cause your skin to become thin and more easily aggravated.

You may have also noticed that your skin is itchier during the night. During the night your body releases something called cytokines, which are immune-system proteins that create inflammation. As well as this, your body produces fewer corticosteroids, which usually fight the inflammation which causes itchy skin.

Steps you can take to help itchy skin

We know that it’s very tempting but try and stop scratching your skin. Scratching only irritates your skin further, causing more redness and dryness.

Sticking to cooler showers is also very beneficial. Showering or bathing in hot water robs your skin of the oils that it needs. Helping your skin retain as much of them as possible will help to reduce the feeling of itchiness.

Avoid harsh hand soaps and gels which can strip the skin on the hands of their natural oils. Hand sanitizers with a high alcohol can worsen already dry hands and cause further itching, so AMELIORATE recommends good old-fashioned soap and water where possible.

Taking the simple steps like maintaining a balanced diet with plenty of water can make a huge difference to the overall health of your skin. To further reduce skin dryness, we also recommend incorporating nutrients like Vitamin C and Omega 3 can be beneficial to your skin health overall.
